Visit to the Wylye

Water has been a topic on the minds of many since the South West officially had its drought status lifted last week. However, following a visit to the banks of the Wylye with the local branch of the Salmon and Trout Association, I am mindful that many underlying problems still remain.

Clearly the immediate availability of water is one thing but the way water companies obtain their water and how this impacts on the underlying health of the acquatic environment is a complex subject that I will be engaged in understanding further in the weeks ahead.

My visit to the River Wylye followed on from the launch of the first Wiltshire 'State of the Environment' report that demonstrates the areas of significant beauty can offer a deceptive front: 70% of rivers in Wiltshire are over-abstracted, and this has caused salmon in the Wylye to decline by 50% in just five years. This was a pioneering exercise by the Wiltshire Wildlife Trust that is being emulated in other areas, and provides a definitive source for county level environmental data - making us the only area to have such detailed figures, which will better inform policy decisions made on a local level.

I look forward to further productive discussion with the Salmon and Trout Association: a branch that deeply cares not just about the broader impacts of our actions on the rivers, but also about what we can do to ensure they are protected for the future.

It is events like this in the constituency that really feed into the views I take to Westminster - with the Water Bill now set in the legislative calendar, I feel I will now be well informed to take forward the problems we have in Wiltshire and ensure they are properly considered by Government Ministers.

Debating Dangerous Dogs

As Parliamentarians, one of the things we value the most is input from experienced members of the public with regards to the policies we adopt. This morning provided a highly valuble opportunity to scrutinise in great detail DEFRA's latest consultation proposals at the Dogs' Trust in Newton Toney.

I will openly admit that this is not an area I have much personal experience in, which is why attending the panel provided excellent insights for me into the benefits and complexities of compulsory microchipping. Tackling dangerous dogs was also referenced, and some distressing incidents were discussed.

Our current legislation is simply not up to the task of dealing with the problem: when 5000 dog attacks occur on private property per year, we cannot afford to ignore the need to allow the Dangerous Dogs Act to cover private property, and there was a broad agreement on this.

It was particularly interesting to hear reflections on the 'Big Society' and how multi agency approaches can encourage responsible dog ownership. We all reflected that whilst legislative changes were certainly necessary, and a step in the right direction, there is also a need to take collective responsibility; legislation is not always the answer. I look forward to some productive engagement in Parliament on the issue in the future, and now feel better informed on the issues involved.

Thanks must go to the Parliamentary Outreach team, who did a lot of work to set up this event.

New Chemotherapy Unit

Today featured a particularly poignant pause for thought after assisting with local elections in Swindon. The official launch of the Hope for Tomorrow Mobile Chemotherapy Unit by Murray Walker a new addition that shows Salisbury NHS will always strive for the extra mile in patient care. I pay tribute to the Hope for Tomorrow charity, who have contributed so much through sterling fundraising efforts that were instrumental in securing this vital new resource.

It was a pleasure to see my former colleague, Angie Wicks, and her husband, whose daughter Kayleigh this unit was named in honour of. I wish the circumstances had been rather different, but hope that this new unit will provide some small measure of comfort to them and all others who have suffered loss at the hands of this tragic disease.

It is a truly admirable aim to want to provide treatment close to home, and I was glad to be present at such a worthwhile and thought provoking launch.

Queen's Diamond Jubilee

Yesterday marked a long anticipated visit to Salisbury by Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth II, and the Duke of Edinburgh as part of their Diamond Jubilee Tour. Despite a murky start to the day, the people of Salisbury lined the streets in full force to mark the occasion.

It was fantastic to see the enthusiasm shared by so many people, and I know her visit was an occasion to be rightly celebrated. We showed that Wiltshire has a lot to be proud of yesterday: a strong sense of community, vibrant history and traditions and talented individuals all came together to showcase the best of what we have to offer in this county.

I was truly honoured to be able to be amongst so many people who appreciated such a joyful and historic event.

Busy morning in Wilton

After a frantic week in Westminster, I was glad to return to the constituency today to spend some time out in Wilton.

The Wilton branch of Riding for the Disabled is a much loved local charity. Given the rural area we live in, we are very fortunate to be able to undertake horse riding in some beautiful areas. The Wilton RDA makes an activity that is not always highly user friendly accessible to many across the community, and they do an excellent job at providing rides for all ages in stunning surroundings. It was great to meet such a positive and vibrant charitable community.

Following on from this, I then attended the opening of South Hills' new nursery site - an extension that was originally a pre-school adjacent to Barford Primary. Staffed by volunteers and located in an old farm close to Wilton, the children there are immersed in the countryside from a young age. They were graded outstanding by OFSTED in 2011, and I have every confidence the children will be very happy at their new site.

Welcoming Schools in Westminster

I am always delighted to learn of local schools coming to visit Parliament. The Houses of Parliament are full of educationalopportunities, and it is fantastic that so many schools visit. For secondary schools, it is often a trip to supplement studies in politics or history; for younger pupils, an opportunity to experience the world of politics for the first time.

Although not within my constituency, Dauntsey's has close links with Salisbury, and I was pleased to drop in on their visit with Claire Perry and talk to some of their history students about political affairs past and present.

I make a point of meeting schools whenever I am able to do so, as it provides me with a valuable opportunity to engage with schools and young people in the centre of the political world. Sadly, I will not be able to meet with Bishop's next month as I am away with the Defence Select Committee. However, I hope to welcome as many constituency schools as possible in the coming months.

Supporting Salisbury Civic Society

Arundells is one of the most significant architectural sites in Salisbury, and on Friday, I joined Salisbury Civic Society to unveila commemorative plaque.

I think it is right that Arundells is provided with every opportunity to become a viable opportunity, and I am glad that the Civic Society's plaque promotes the historical value of the site. The Civic Society's plaques are dotted across the city, and provide a wealth of interesting insight and unusual information to visitors and residents alike. Arundells is a site of great local importance, and I feel the plaque duly recognises its importance, as well as the contribution made to Salisbury by the life of Sir Edward Heath.

The plaques are just one aspect of the Civic Society's contribution to the life of Salisbury; their award scheme also recognises outstanding buildings and promotes innovative thought in architectural design across the city.

More information on the Civic Society and their work can be found here.

Help to Hear Drop In

Reforms to the NHS are currently generating a flurry of interest, and I believe now is the perfect opportunity to highlight the work of an excellent group who already provide an outstanding healthcare solution to those in need.

Action on Hearing Loss is a national charity working to provide support and services to those suffering from any form of hearing loss or tinnitus. Their 'Hear to Help' initiative works to train community volunteers who are then able to provide support in the local area, from showing individuals how to get the best from their hearing aid to providing training and supportive services.

Last week, I met with the dedicated volunteers who operate Salisbury's two hour drop in session at Salisbury Library. I fully appreciate now how much support these individuals provide in driving up the quality of care. In just one session, 63 individuals were able to easily and conveniently access care that would have proved more difficult and time consuming through the NHS. Well done to the many volunteers I met who were refurbishing hearing aids and supplying batteries to their owners.

Visiting Bourne Valley Day Centre

I was back in the constituency this Friday, and keen to get out and about again after last Friday's disappointment in the Commons for the Daylight Saving Bill. This week, I travelled to Winterbourne Dauntsey where the Day Centre meets every Friday.

They provide a weekly day out for older residents of the Bourne Valley and those who have recently moved into homes in Salisbury. There was an extremely welcoming and friendly atmosphere at the Day Centre, and all the members clearly enjoyed being there greatly. It has also been running for over 30 years now, and has become an integral part of the social community in the Winterbournes.

It was also great to see the finished quilt that all the members had contributed to (which I am pictured with!). In my mind, it says a great deal about this small community that everyone is willing to get involved and pursue these fantastic projects.

23 JAN 2012

Opening New Sports Hall

I always value any opportunity available to offer my support to local schools. Recently, I was invited to open a new sports hall at Trafalgar School in Downton.

Since my last visit to the Trafalgar School, the progress that has been made is astonishing and this really is an extraordinary sports facility that will be of great benefit to a thriving school community. Sport is an activity that is essential to the curriculum, but at the same time provides a vast number of opportunities as an extracurricular activity; I am sure this facility will allow a large number of students to excel in their sports and provide a great deal of enjoyment.

This visit was one in a succession recently; I am pleased that schools in Wiltshire are gaining levels of funding that mean we can continue to provide the best facilities to our children across the county.

16 DEC 2011

Visiting St Paul's Construction Site

It is an absolute tragedy that in my constituency, there are still people classified homeless or in accommodation unfit for purpose. I know the Council works tirelessly to do everything possible to minimise this, but it is still greatly valued when new construction projects get underway to alleviate the problem.

The project seeks to fully refurbish the exterior of the building and provide much needed internal improvements and repairs, including new kitchen fittings and the introduction of a gas fired central heating system. It has garnered widespread support from the local community, including numerous charities and individuals; over £180,000 has been raised so far.St Paul's Homes have become more and more derelict over the past few years, and are in desperate need of refurbishment. I welcome the project that BCHA, in collaboration with Salisbury Trust for the Homeless, is undertaking.

I have no doubt that this development will become an important safe haven for those in need, and I wish BCHA and STFH every success with the project.

Parkinson's UK Coffee Morning

This Saturday I was pleased to attend a coffee morning at the local Salisbury and District branch of the Parkinson's UK Society, where I was very warmly welcomed. I greatly enjoyed discussing issues such as the requirements of reform of social care and the impact of the current demographic situation on support for the elderly.

I strongly support reform to the care system, and recognise how urgently changes are needed. I feel it is important to ensure that policy making in this area is honest about the size of the need and the reality of the funding challenge. Inevitably greater contributions will be required from my generation if we are to have a system that is fit for purpose for future generations.

The coffee morning gave me an opportunity to engage with some of my constituents on a wide variety of topics – from concessionary bus travel for the elderly to complex moral issues like stem cell research ethics! I always enjoy debate with my constituents, and this was no exception; I am grateful to the Society for having me and look forward to the resolution of some of their concerns!

03 NOV 2011

7th Heaven

On Saturday, I was delighted to be invited to open a new craft store in Salisbury. 7th Heaven, located on Fisherton Street, seeks to provide craft and hobby supplies, something I think the people of Salisbury will greatly appreciate, especially in the run up to Christmas!

7th Heaven is a family run business operated by four members of the Gardiner family. I am pleased to see such an enterprise succeeding in Salisbury; local businesses are the pillars of our community, and the strong family ethos that underpins many of them in South Wiltshire is something we can all be proud to support. The store will also be offering crafting classes as well, and I am pleased to note that the Gardiners' are willing to share their expertise with the people of Salisbury.

I have no doubt that 7th Heaven will become a popular stop for both local residents and tourists and I wish them success for the future.

SCRAP Plastic Bags!

Although currently away in Pakistan with the Westminster Foundation for Democracy (more on that next week when I return), I am looking forward to getting straight back into the constituency on Monday.

On Monday night I am attending a meeting at the Guildhall at 7:30 hosted by SCRAP (Salisbury City Residents Action on Packaging. In this day and age where we are so conscious of the impact we have on the environment, SCRAP's efforts to eliminate unsustainable packaging should be applauded.

The event is open to all and promises to be an interesting presentation, hopefully followed by some lively debate on how our community can work together for a greener Salisbury!

19 SEP 2011

On your marks, get set, go!

This Sunday, I was invited by the Trussell Trust to start their annual Food Bank 5k over at Old Sarum. I am always happy to support a local charity that I know does such a great deal for our community; the Food Bank is a brilliant resource that started in Salisbury, and now provides much needed emergency supplies to around 60000 people nationally. Seeing almost a hundred runners turn out to show their support for this cause on such an overcast day highlights the dedication to charity that I am continually delighted to see in Salisbury. Twice as many people as the Trust expected actually took part this year, and hopefully even more will compete next year. Somehow I have ended up volunteering to run myself next year, and look forward to tackling the challenge!

The event itself was a great success again this year; I stayed to see many of the runners from the finish line and presented trophies to the first three men and women across the line. The quickest time was an outstanding 22 minutes! Congratulations to everyone who took part and helped make it a success.

Busy Day in the Constituency

After a busy week in Westminster, I was glad to return to the constituency last Friday and launch into another exciting day. I had a highly successful meeting discussing the 2012 Amesbury Regeneration with Mayor Andy Rhind-Tutt, who is energetically pursuing the project. I look forward to keeping in touch with future developments, particularly around the value of Amesbury's heritage for developing a stronger profile for Wiltshire's tourism industry.

This was followed by a meeting with local Salmon and Trout Fishermen where we discussed the challenges facing them with aquatic environmental issues. I look forward to discussing these on a future visit to the Wylye and will be lobbying the Minister on the subject. I held one of my regular surgeries in the afternoon and I will once again do my utmost to handle all the issues that were brought to my attention in that surgery.

The day ended at a Jazz and Dance night where I made a brief appearance to draw the raffle prizes. The fundraiser was organised by two local causes I passionately support, the Trussell Trust and SWAN Advocacy. I look forward to firing the starting gun at this weekend's Trussell Trust Foodbank 5K.

CI Precision in Churchfields

It was both a pleasure and an eye-opener to learn more about the remarkable work of CI Precision in Churchfields. The Roberts family have grown their business into a remarkable high-tech hub and manufacturing operation right in the heart of Salisbury.

Constable exhibition at Salisbury Museum

On Friday, I was delighted to not only have a chance to view the magnificent Constable exhibition at Salisbury Museum, which I heartily recommend, but also to play my part in marking a trail of locations from where the artist is believed to have painted his iconic images of the city.

I unveiled one of the stops on the trail at the Rose & Crown, where Constable admired the view back in 1831.

23 MAY 2011

Salisbury Child Contact centre, you bet!

I'm delighted to say that Salisbury Child Contact centre are £107 better off, thanks to Ladbrokes, who this week paid out on the charity bet I placed with them back in November last year.

With both Salisbury City FC and Southampton FC flying in their respective leagues, I opted for a double on both to win promotion. Later the same day, I met Liz Sirman from the Child Contact Centre and promised that, if I came up trumps, the money would be hers.

Saints obliged early, giving me all the more reason to celebrate The Whites' thrilling last-gasp play-off victory!

Salisbury's child contact centre provides a safe, neutral meeting place for children whose parents have broken up in the most difficult of circumstances so that they can retain a relationship with their absent parent.

As a small charity, entirely reliant on a small band of volunteers, I am hopeful that the money will buy the children a good selection of toys and games to enjoy with their mums and dads.

17 MAY 2011

Awareness for Juvenile Diabetes

I was delighted to 'get on my bike' on Saturday and take part in a very public spinning challenge in the Guildhall square, raising money and awareness for Juvenile Diabetes.

Along with my colleague, MP for Devizes Claire Perry, I was part of Team Westminster, aiming to cycle as far as possible in an exhausting eight-minute stint.

If you want to see how we got on, the distances we achieved are online at www.spintocurediabetes.org.uk, along with more details of brilliant fundraising events going on across the country.

Campaign to save Ocean Ward

I have become involved with - the campaign to save Ocean Ward – the brilliant children's cardiac surgery centre in Southampton that has saved – and continues to improve - the lives of so many Salisbury children. Last week I attended a meeting in Parliament about the ongoing national review of children's cardiac surgery which aims to reduce the number of paediatric cardiac surgery centres.

On Friday, Richard, Kirsty and Lucy Maguire were among the visitors to my advice surgery.

I was delighted to discuss the progress of the campaign with them and also to sign the petition for the retention of paediatric cardiac surgery at Southampton.

The Maguire family are one of many Salisbury families who have been in touch with me over the last few weeks who have good reason to be grateful for the care and expertise at Southampton. As a desperately poorly baby, Lucy underwent complex lifesaving open heart surgery and is today a beautiful four-year-old, who enjoys school, ballet and swimming lessons.

In my view, the only criteria the review should consider is which option will deliver the greatest number of wonderful outcomes like this one.

10 MAY 2011

Halfway hostel, Dolphin Street

I was delighted to test my head for heights in order to take part in the topping out ceremony for Alabare's very impressive new 'half-way' hostel in Dolphin Street.

I am certain that it will do marvellous work readying people to return to fulfilled lives and independence.

18 APR 2011

Parkinsons Forum

At the weekend, I was honoured to be invited to join the panel for a Parkinsons Disease discussion forum at Salisbury District Hospital. It was a delight to meet and chat to experts and members – both formally and later, over lunch.

13 APR 2011

Citizens Advice on Money Active

I was very pleased to join the MoneyActive session with Wiltshire representatives of the Citizens Advice Bureau in Westminster. I gained valuable insights into the problems of managing money effectively and a clear understanding of the valuable work done by the CAB to help people deal with financial problems.

Helping make a dream come true for a 16-18 year old

I have been contacted by Childrens Chance, a local charity, which has £1000 to give to a young person in Salisbury aged between 16 and 18.

Applications close on 1st May 2011 for the first award of the Bobbie Chettleburgh Grant, which gives an opportunity for a young person living in the SP1 or SP2 postcode areas to experience something that would otherwise be out of their reach financially, for example a gap year, a rugby tour, an orchestral tour, a community project overseas, a football academy, tennis coaching, school ski trip etc

If you know a deserving young person for whom £1000 could make all the difference, go to www.childrenschance.co.uk for more information.

Farley Fox Playground Opening

On Saturday, I was honoured to be asked to declare the new Farley Fox playground officially open. There was an excellent turnout to enjoy the launch and festivities.

The culmination of years of effort by the community, it is a superb facility that I am sure will enrich the lives of many young people and some older ones with the adult fitness equipment that is also included.

21 MAR 2011

Salisbury Tourism Week

On Friday, I accepted an invitation to spend some time at Salisbury's Tourist Information Centre, celebrating British Tourism week and promoting all the wonderful things that Salisbury has to offer visitors.

I am keen to do all I can to help this area maximise the benefits it receives from tourism and I enjoyed talking through some of the key issues with Jane Fry and her team.

Salisbury TIC is a multi award-winner and, as ambassadors for Salisbury, its friendly, knowledgeable staff are second to none.

11 MAR 2011

Power down for dinner

Yesterday I was delighted to join colleagues from all parties on College Green to support the Power Down for Dinner Campaign. The campaign, which is supported by Bisto, is all about celebrating the role of family mealtimes in promoting togetherness in family life.

We all lead hectic lifestyles now and taking the time to sit down together as a family and discuss the day is an activity that too often has to take a back seat.

10 MAR 2011

National Autistic Society

I was delighted to meet up with Henry Clark, a National Autistic Society Young Campaigner from Winterslow, at the parliamentary launch of the NAS's You Need To Know charter, which aims to increase understanding of the condition among Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services staff.

Henry along with the rest of the Young Campaigners' Group, who all have autism, held a special screening of their film 'Open Your Mind', which they created about their experiences. They also unveiled a 12-point charter to help explain simple changes to environment and communication that can really help autism sufferers.

It was a privilege to spend time with these intelligent and talented teenagers. They've worked extremely hard and overcome many difficulties to produce their charter and film. Many of the points they have put forward are simple to put into practice, and some require little or no cost, and I will campaign locally to help our local CAMHS services to take these ideas on board.

03 MAR 2011

Busy week in Parliament

I have spent a busy week in Westminster. I have asked my second PMQ yesterday, as well as putting questions to Oliver Letwin, the Cabinet Office Minister, and Gary Streeter, spokesman for the Speaker's Committee on Electoral Commission. You can read my speech on the Protection of Freedoms Bill here, or under the In Parliament section of my website.

28 FEB 2011

Focus Point Volunteering Day

Last Friday, my latest day of volunteering was spent with the wonderful staff and clients of Focus Point on Stratford Road.

As well as joining in activities with the service users, I was delighted to have the opportunity to chat about funding (and other issues) with team leader Zanna Harris and her dedicated staff.

They do a superb job looking after some of the most vulnerable people in our community and I am proud to have people like them in my constituency.

No to AV

The Conservative No to AV campaign has now officially launched, and activists across the country will be out delivering leaflets, knocking on doors and explaining to people why the Party is opposed to the AV system.

William Hague has sent an email to the entire Conservative mailing list, and today, David Cameron gave a speech setting out our opposition to the proposed system.

The Conservative website gives a selection of reasons on why you should say No to AV.

AV is unfair

With First Past the Post, everybody gets one vote. But under AV, supporters of extreme parties like the BNP would get their vote counted many times, while people who vote for one of the mainstream candidates would only get their vote counted once.

AV doesn't work

Rather than the candidate who receives the most votes winning the election, the person who finishes second or even third could be declared the winner.

AV is expensive

Calculating the results is a long, complicated process, which would cost the taxpayer millions. It can take days to figure out exactly who has won.

AV is discredited

Whereas First Past the Post is the most widely used system in the world, only 3 countries actually use AV - Fiji, Australia and Papua New Guinea. In Fiji they want to get rid of it, and in Australia six out of ten people want to scrap it.

No-one wants it

Even the 'Yes' campaigners don't actually want AV - they see it as a convenient stepping stone to even more reforms. Many of the Yes campaigners have previously criticised AV.

AV is not a proportional system

The independent commission chaired by the senior Liberal Democrat Roy Jenkins in 1998 concluded that AV was 'even less proportional' than our existing system, and warned that it was 'disturbingly unpredictable'.

Education Bill

Yesterday evening, I spoke in the debate on the Education Bill. You can read the transcript by clicking this link. I am very proud of all schools in our constituency and I believe this Bill will do much to help them flourish even more.

04 FEB 2011

Godolphin School

This afternoon I have visited the Godolphin School, talking with Sixth Formers there about politics, the life of an MP and answering any questions they had. I've just got back from meeting the Till Valley Conservatives, and about to head out on to the streets of the City with the Salisbury Street Pastors to see the work they do.

Salisbury Trust for the Homeless

This morning, I have managed to fit in two meetings and the launch of the Salisbury Trust for the Homeless Campaign to reburbish the St Paul's Almshouses at St Paul's Church. I wish them the best of luck, and urge you to give to this very good cause.

APPG for Financial Education

This week I was delighted to be among the founder members of a new All Party Parliamentary Group promoting financial education for young people and to be at the launch event, attended by Money Saving Expert, Martin Lewis.

In a recent study, 68 per cent of students were unable to identify the cheapest loan, when given a selection of different products to choose from.

I believe that the best way to beat the scourge of personal debt and drive unscrupulous lenders out of business is to equip the next generation with the information they need to make informed and responsible choices.

Hopefully, the group will be able to ensure that young people leave school with the knowledge and confidence they need to control their money rather than let it control them.

Cutting the first sod for South Wilts Sports Club

(c) Denis Murphy/www.sport4salisbury.com

I was honoured to cut the first sod on the site of the new Pavilion at South Wilts Sports Club on Saturday. I, for one, can't wait to see the smart new clubhouse, serving the existing sporting community and, hopefully, attracting plenty of new people to get involved in local sport.

I am well aware how much blood, sweat and tears have gone into getting to this point and it is fitting that it has been a team effort, from first to last.

With the inclusion of conference facilities, I hope and expect that Salisbury and South Wilts Sports Club is about to enter a bright new era as a magnet for the entire sporting community.

28 JAN 2011

Cafe Alabare

My latest volunteering stint was with Alabare Christian Care Centres. In an attempt to gain an overview of the vast range of work Alabare does, I was put to work in several sites across the city centre – Cafe Alabare, the drop-in centre and the charity's head office.

There is no better way to gain a full understanding of the work of an organisation and the needs it is addressing than by spending a day getting 'hands-on' with its day to day running and Alabare was no exception. They gave me a tough but thoroughly enlightening and worthwhile day, for which I am very grateful.

27 JAN 2011

Holocaust Memorial Day

Today, 27th January 2011, marks the 66th anniversary of the liberation of the Nazi concentration and extermination camp, Auschwitz-Birkenau. The Holocaust Educational Trust placed a Book of Commitment in the House of Commons to give MPs the opportunity to remember those who were persecuted and murdered during the Holocaust.

I have signed the Book of Commitment and pay tribute to those remarkable individuals who survived the appalling events of the Holocaust and have since dedicated their lives to educating younger generations about the dangers of allowing persecution and intolerance to take hold in society.

Ladbrokes Charity Bet

Today, I was delighted to accept an invitation from Ladbrokes to visit the Salisbury branch in Fisherton Street and chat with staff and punters.

While I was there, Ladbrokes kindly offered me a £50 charity bet and, after much deliberation, I plumped for what I hope will be a sure thing - a double on Salisbury City FC and Southampton FC to each gain promotion this year.

For the remainder of the season, I will be keeping a particularly close eye on the fortunes of our two local high-fliers!

Speaking of which, what a great result for City on Saturday against Wrexham. Let's hope the Whites can go marching on to further Trophy glory!

Lifeblood 2011 VTE Prevention Awards

This week I presented an award to local haematologist, Dr Tamara Everington, in recognition of her work to combat thrombosis (blood clots), at the inaugural Lifeblood Thombosis Prevention Awards ceremony held in Westminster.

Dr Everington's combination of intelligence, charisma, hard work and sheer persistence has made her a great champion for thrombosis prevention locally and nationally. Working with her colleagues she has been successful in building a high quality thrombosis prevention programme for patients in Salisbury.

Thrombosis is a devastating killer. It is astonishing to think that 500 people die each week in our hospitals from this largely preventable condition. Making sure that people are aware of the dangers of developing blood clots, particularly during hospital stays, and ensuring they are properly risk-assessed by hospital staff , will go a long way to reducing the thousands of preventable deaths from this potentially fatal condition.

01 JAN 2011

Happy New Year

Happy New Year! As 2011 dawns it is with some trepidation that I look at the prospects for the months ahead. As the Prime Minister pointed out in his New Year message there are clearly some tough times facing the country in this coming year. The impact of the VAT increase, changes to spending levels and concerns about increased interest rates will dominate household concerns but there is also a deeper sense that the changes the Government are making will lead to a fundamental improvement in the outlook for the country. Today the UK is rather like someone who has been building up a large credit card debt coming out of a meeting with a debt adviser - if certain sensible short term disciplines are followed there is every hope that prosperity will return when the debts are cleared.

However, I am not flippant about the difficulties many in my constituency and beyond will face this year. We still have no certainty on the future of the HPA at Porton, there are many on low incomes who are anxious about how benefit changes will impact them. There are individual "cases" that are in process with my office where tough personal circumstances need quick interventions from various agencies of Government so that lives can be improved. As I said on the morning of 7th May when I was elected I will continue to strive to be the most effective advocate and representative I can for the people of Salisbury and South Wiltshire in 2011 and my office is ready to help where we can.

On the national politics front, the Referendum on AV will take place in May. I will be voting against this change as I don't think AV is a better alternative to the first-past-the-post system though I feel like a footballer asked to comment on the rules of his own game when discussing this matter. It will be for the people to decide and that is how it should be.

I also think 2011 will be the year when the Coalition beds down - the novelty of the once in a generation arrangements of two parties sharing power has taken some getting used to - for MPs and the commentators who are used to a two- party dynamic and find the disagreements difficult to plot in the mental map of the political landscape that has arisen in the last 30 years. In 2011 the disagreements will be less remarkable as they will be expected as two parties see things differently - though perhaps when decisions are made at cabinet there will need to be more discipline in how the settled will is then justified by all members of the Government.

The debate around the proposed constitutional changes to the House of Lords and the electoral system will provoke a lively debate in the country but the key challenge for 2011 will be to see debts progressively reduced as the economy recovers and growth returns to UK plc – bringing prosperity and optimism for the long term health of our country. It will be an exciting year and of course one thing we can guarantee is that much will happen that we could contemplate today. I wish all my constituents and their families a happy and fulfilled 2011!

Happy Christmas

I have just posted the last batch of letters to constituents before Christmas and I am now going to take a few days off with my family before I address the Wilton Hunt on 27th December. I wanted to take this opportunity to wish all my constituents a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.

It has been an amazing year for me personally. This time last Christmas Eve I did not know whether I would be called for an interview for the vacancy left following Robert Key's retirement. Since then I have been selected, elected and been an MP for nearly 8 months. I have now established my office in Brown Street and Westminster and feel that I am getting to grips with the wide range of roles that I am asked to fulfil as a Member of Parliament. Trying to be a "fair-broker" in disputes and discussions locally, acting as an advocate for constituents as well as provide a listening ear and advice at constituency surgeries.

At Westminster, I have enjoyed work on the Defence Select Committee; I have led an Adjournment debate on the future of the HPA at Porton; asked many written and oral questions and also participated in numerous discussions on policies that impact the people of Salisbury and South Wiltshire. There is always more to do and I will write about my plans for 2011 early in the New Year.

I know the new Coalition Government's decisions will not have pleased everyone – and I am acutely aware that for many Conservatives the transition to supporting a Coalition Government has taken some adjustment. I have tried to use my best judgement on what is right for the people of Salisbury and South Wiltshire in my voting and have tried to offer a speedy response to anyone who contacts me asking why I have voted one way or the other. I will always do my best to be accessible to my constituents.

Before I sign off I would like to thank all those who have written me kind notes and sent Christmas greetings over recent weeks – they are appreciated and valued. I look forward to meeting many of my "new" constituents early in 2011 as I complete my first 12 months in Parliament as your MP. Happy Christmas!

Friends of South West Racing Reception

I spoke at the Friends of South West Racing Reception in the House of Commons on 15th December 2010 and stressed the importance of Racing United's campaign for a Fair Levy, as if the Levy continues to be reduced it will have a huge impact on the overall funding of horse racing. This in turn will have a knock on effect on local race courses such as the excellent racecourse in Salisbury.

I am hoping the Secretary of State's decision on the levy in the New Year will ensure the decline in resources for the industry is halted and racing is able to flourish.

13 DEC 2010

Brown Street Surgery

My busy weekend has been rounded off this morning, with a surgery at my constituency office at 12 Brown Street. It was, once again, full of an interesting range of issues and stimulating conversation.

11 DEC 2010

The Dog's Trust and Bishop's Politics Society

Before the Panto yesterday, I visited Bishop's Politics Society, where I gave a talk and then held a Q&A session. They were well informed young men & women and certainly kept me on my toes with some testing questions!

Following on from Bishop's, I visited The Dog's Trust in Newton Tony, where I was delighted to have a dog named in my honour. Glen is currently looking for a new home, and you can find out more at The Dog Trust website.

10 DEC 2010

Just returned from the wonderful production of Aladdin at Salisbury Playhouse. Best production of Aladdin I've seen!

07 DEC 2010

Maldivian Presidential Visit

I had the pleasure of meeting the President of the Maldives when he visited the Honorary Consulate in Salisbury on Saturday, as part of his tour of England. I was presented with an ornate vase, which I was pleased to accept. I had visited the Maldives through my work with the Westminster Foundation for Democracy and am pleased to be able to continue my relationship with the country.

04 DEC 2010

Santa Fun Run

I was given the honour of starting the Naomi House Santa Fun Run, where participants were able to complete a small run in santa costume. The event was organized by Naomi House as a fundraiser, and I was pleased to do my bit. Unfortunately, due to other commitments I couldn't run, but maybe I will be able to next year!

03 DEC 2010

Bemerton Surgery

Unfortunately, due to the treacherous weather conditions and the Daylight Saving Bill, I have had to cancel my planned surgery for this evening. I have pledged to call those who had an appointment, or offer them another time to see me.

03 DEC 2010

Daylight Savings Bill

Usually I spend my Friday in the constituency, but this week I stayed in Westminster to support Rebecca Harris' Daylight Savings Bill, after I was inundated with constituents supporting it. I'm pleased to say the Bill gained the 100 votes needed, and is now progressing to the Committee stage.

Constituency Day

Met with six constituents this morning in my Brown Street office, before visiting a Amesnury town Councillor.

19 NOV 2010

Spent the day in the Constituency Office sorting out all the admin side of things! Managed to fit in a couple of meetings though.

12 NOV 2010

Help for Heroes

Another busy day in the constituency beginning with a interview with BBC South today, and then a trip to Manor Fields Primary School. I was also asked to present Tescos Computers for Schools award at the shop on Southampton Road, before driving through the Woodford Valley , to take part in the Woodford Valley Primary School's Worship.

There was also time to see the Help for Heroes charity before Remembrance Sunday as our thoughts move towards the fallen. The work they do is essential for helping vetrans after they have returned home.

05 NOV 2010

Cathedral School and Surgery

I must begin by thanking Amanda English for the hospitality shown to me by the Catehdral School, on what was a great visit. A lovely school in such beautiful surroundings. After the school I went to the farewell lunch of Sarah Axton, my Private Secretary who left for greater things! Many thanks for all she has done!

I also held a surgery at my constituency office, which as always was well attended and booked up very quickly.

03 NOV 2010

BBC Interview

Just completed my interview with Peter Henley of the BBC for The Politics Show which will be broadcast on Sunday on BBC1. Don't want to say anything about it... You'll just have to watch it!

30 OCT 2010

Wilton Community Centre Open Day

i have spent the day visiting constituents, as well as representatives of the Fire Brigade Union. I managed to fit in a small interview with Spire FM, and then popped in to the Wilton Community Centre open day, which was being held for the installation of the new solar panel system.

29 OCT 2010

Volunteer Day - Naomi House

Just completed another Volunteer Day, this time helping at Naomi House. I spent the day helping to prepare lunch and got stuck into decorate the house for their Holloween Party, which went brilliantly by all accounts. A big thank you to everyone I met, and keep up the good work.

For those of you who are not aware of teh great work that Naomi House do, check out there website: www.naomihouse.org.uk .

22 OCT 2010

Another busy week draws to an end! Just today, i have visited the Samaritans, Sudan Link Coffee Morning, Trethowans and held a surgery in Alderbury. To finish the day, I was honoured to give out the prizes at St. Joseph's Prize-giving. Well done to all those who recieved a reward for their hard work.

You can read the Journal's report here

17 OCT 2010

Harnham Free Church and Local Hero Awards

A busy past few days for me, as I have rushed around the constituency. The highlights have been Naim Audio, The Ladies Luncheon Group and Riverbourne Community Farm. I also spoke about life as a Christian MP at Harnham Free Church earlier, and have just returned from a very enjoyable evening at the Salisbury Journal Local Hero Awards. Well done to all those who were nominated.

12 OCT 2010

Anne Milton MP visit to Porton Down

Today Anne Milton MP, The Parliamentary Under Secretary of State for Public Health, visited Porton Down and I was invited along to join the Ministrial visit. It was an opportrunity to make the Minister aware of the problems arising from the proposed move away from the site; a move that would have a detrimental impact on the community.

08 OCT 2010

Bishopdown Farm Surgery

I have held my first surgery on Bishopdown Farm this evening, meeting people with a wide range of problems from parking problems through to health issues. I can never promise a perfect result but I will do my best to achieve one. thank you to Cllr Bill Moss and his wife for helping everything to run smoothly.

I also managed to open the Landford meeting room in the Village Hall and now have a plaque on the wall!

05 OCT 2010

Party Conference

I have spent the past couple of days in Birmingham at the Conservative Party Conference. Unfortunately I was so busy with meetings that I didnt get the chance to spend any time listening to the speeches being given in the main hall. It didn't detract from an enjoyable and informative time!

This evening I am heading to Paris to take part in a Franco- British Council Roundtable Defence Debate.

01 OCT 2010

St Martin's Primary School

To begin this month I began by opening St Martin's School's library and then took a tour to see what else the school had to offer. Just like all the other schools in the constituency, it is a great educational institution and I wish it all the best in the future.

30 SEP 2010

Wessex Partnership

To finish off the very busy month I've had, I made sure I finished the month with as much as I could fit in. I began the day by meeting the Wessex Partnership to discuss there plans for the future and how the schools can progress together. It was great to see the Headteachers of the local schools actively working together and discussing the ways to better educate the children of Salisbury. I look forward to attending the next meeting, should my diary permit.

29 SEP 2010

Jo Benson Day Centre

The Jo Benson Day Centre was the setting for my monthly volunteer day. I took part in the quiz and talked to the visitors, as well as a conversation with Lady Jo Benson, who has done a great job with the centre. They even provided me with lunch!

Following on from the Day Centre, I was interviewed for Spire FM and BBC Wiltshire, the two local radio stations, on life as an MP and Defence respectively.

24 SEP 2010

Shrewton Surgery

Held a surgery at Shrewton Recreational Hall (and car park!) where once again I was shown the range of problems constituents face. As always, I will do everything I can to help those who need it. Surgeries are held every two weeks, in various areas of the constituency, and an appointment can be made through my office.

I also fitted in a rewarding meeting with Jane Scott, Leader of Wiltshire Council, and I hope a strong working partnership can be formed.

23 SEP 2010

Shaw Trust, SWAN and Bishop's Prizegiving

Another busy day in the constituency! It began with the Carers Support Coffee Morning held in New Street, followed by a brief meeting with the Shaw Trust at the Portway Centre near Old Sarum. The Women's Refuge was my next port of call where I met the staff and a number of those using their services, all with harrowing backstories, and I will do everything in my power to help them.

This evening I have been to teh SWAN Advocacy's 10th Anniversary Celebration in the vibrant surroundings of Salisbury Arts Centre. Finally, I made it to the Bishop Wordsworth School Prizegiving, where once again I was in attendance with bright young minds of Salisbury. My best wishes for all them for the future.

21 SEP 2010

Solstice Park

Today i visited Solistice park, just outside of Amesbury to meet with the manager of the Holiday Inn situated there, and to attend the unveiling of the White Horse as a Guest of Honour, giving a small speech to the audience. The Horse was designed and built by QuinetiQ apprentices and will add a creative touch to the area.

18 SEP 2010

Naomi House Open Day

Popped into the Naomi House Open Day today for an hour and was treated to a tour and general chat with the staff. It is such an inspirational place! I'm already very much looking forward to my volunteer day on the 29th October. Salisbury doesn't have a hospice for children, although many of the City's children do attend, and therefore I feel that it deserves credit.

17 SEP 2010

Laverstock Schools

Two more school visits today, with the Laverstock schools, St. Edmunds and Wyvern, hosting me for the morning. The future looks promising for both the schools and hopefully the successes they have achieved can be continued. Thank you to Headteachers Jackie Goodall and Chris Tomes for their hospitality.

11 SEP 2010

Bemerton Heath Harlequins FC

Rushing across Salisbury at half-time, I made it to the second half of Bemerton Heath Harlequins match against Moneyfields, with Bemerton ending up 3-1 winners. I was the guest of match sponsor and Labour Councillor, Cllr Ricky Rodgers, who was a very warm host. I wish the Harlequins and Salisbury Rugby all the best for the season.

11 SEP 2010

Salisbury Rugby Club

Just got back from an afternoon of Salisbury sport! My first stop was Salisbury Rugby Club where I watched the first-half of Salisbury's 61-0 thrashing of Frome on the opening day of the league. It was great to see the local team out playing the opposition, with the power of Salisbury's pack staggering and the ability and willingness to run the ball a devastating combination. I left with the score 27-0, so well done to Salisbury for over doubling their lead.

10 SEP 2010

Surgery

I held a Surgery this afternoon at my constituency office in Brown Street. The problems facing many in the constiuency are moving and I will continue to do everything I can to help them.

10 SEP 2010

Connexions

Earlier today I met with Jon Rich from Connexions, to discuss the options that young people in Salisbury could have. They provide a great service and help many of the young people in the area. With unemployment high, it's good to see that people want to learn more and gain more qualifications in order to better themselves. I really did enjoy finding out more about the youth projects that they are undertaking and those planned for the future.

You can see my visit on the Connexions website: http://www.sparksite.co.uk/entries/mp_visit_to_salisbury_youth_development_centre

03 SEP 2010

NFU and Boscombe Down

This morning I visited Boscombe Down and the team from Qinetic. It is always interesting to see the logistics behind our Armed Forces and I was not disappointed. Being on the House of Commons Select Defence Committee means that these sorts of visits are critical in my work and I loved the chance of seeing the work first hand.

After Qinetic, I met with National Farmers' Union representatives and local farmers, as I continue to back the interests of rural communities. I believe strongly in agriculture and feel that not enough is being done to protect our own farmers from intrusive legislation. With so much bureaucracy surrounding farmers I hope to table a question to the Secretary of State to make things easier for our hard-working farmers.

02 SEP 2010

Griffin School and the Salisbury Playhouse

Another school visit today, just as the schools are starting to go back. Griffin School (for little ones), on the Castle Road, has a lot to offer the community and I wish it every success to the future. After the school, I went to the Salisbury Playhouse and met the Executive Director and the leadership team, and I'm pleased to see this centre of culture for Salisbury is doing well, and I will endeavour to support it as much as I can as the spending round discussions conclude. A letter to the Arts Council and Secretary of State will be going out shortly! The shows I have seen there have been great, and I am sure the standard will be maintained....

01 SEP 2010

Friend's Provident, Odstock Medical Ltd and Sarum Academy

Since recess was called I have been spending most of my time in the constituency and today was no different. I spent the morning at Friend's Provident, discussing their plans for the future and as one of the city's main employers it was well worth finding out more about the issues facing their business. I was pleased to hear they are doing well and the Salisbury office seems to be very much part of their long term plans.

I then went on to the Salisbury District Hospital to visit Odstock Medical Ltd. I  was used as a dummy to show the procedures they carry out to assist MS sufferers. It was great to be involved and gave me a greater understanding of what goes on. As ever, I feel the vital work of developing new devices is critical. A letter to the Dept for Business will be sent to try and iron out some issues the management are facing. I also met with a number of constituents about Equitable Life, a problem that many people in the constituency are facing. I will continue to fight for the right amount of compensation and make representations on their behalf.

Sarum Academy was next port of call, with an introduction to their new principal, Ruth Johnson, giving me a tour. I look forward to seeing which direction she takes the school and wish the school, Ruth and the staff all the best for the future. A letter and another conversation with Michael Gove to reinforce the need for proper funding to replace the failing buildings will be a priority. From there I went on to the South Newton & Stoford Parish Council meeting to hear ongoing concerns about the A36 - more work to try and persuade the Highways Agency that more needs to be done will be my challenge next week.

27 AUG 2010

Trussell Trust Volunteering Day

Today was the first of my monthly volunteer days, with the first charity being the Trussell Trust. I was worked hard, moving wool bales about, and I must admit I reckon I'll sleep well. But it was a pleasure to help the charity and those that are involved with its work, as well as the rewarding feeling of giving something back to the community ( in a small way compared to the regular volunteers)

26 AUG 2010

INSPIRE

INSPIRE have done a fantastic job to promote research into spinal injuries. I am happy to become a Patron and look forward to attending the AGM on Saturday 11th September. With each visit I take to Salisbury Hospital and each dimension I am shown, I get a sense of how good our health services. However, more can always be done, and I will do everything in my power to make sure that Salisbury is a centre for excellence for the NHS with the extra charitable activities which augment the state funded facilities being just as important in providing for the ever increasing numbers of medical solutions that are available.

23 AUG 2010

Mental Health Partnership

I visited the Mental Health Partnership based on the Wilton Road. Mental Health is an issue I feel strongly about and believe that we all need to help those who suffer mental illness. I will continue to do all I can for the Partnership and those who are affected by the effects of depression and other serious medical health challenges.

21 AUG 2010

Winterslow Horticultural Society

Winterslow Horticultural Society very kindly invited me to hand out the awards at their show today. It was a pleasure to give out prizes to those who had done so well to grow magnificent plants and vegetables. Congratulations to all those who were involved.

18 AUG 2010

Salisbury Farmer's Market

I had a lovely walk through the Salisbury Farmers' Market in the Market Square, even managed to try a few of the tasters available. Farming is an integral part of this area and I will do my best to support the farmers. The produce is second to none and I look forward to sampling more soon - we need to realise that more support for local producers is required if our farms are to continue to survive in the current form.

17 AUG 2010

Salisbury Rugby Club and CAMRA

Last night I went to the Salisbury Rugby Club Open Evening and met with a number of people associated with the club. I've even promised to go watch a match once the season gets underway - the first home match on 11th September. This evening I had the chance to meet those involved with CAMRA, the Campaign for Real Ale, at The Winchester Gate in Rampart Road. It's good to see that many people still care about Real Ale and I shall make more of an effort to drink proper beer... I must admit my usual tipple is a Stella...they did not look impressed when I told them this!

10 AUG 2010

Arundells and Mompesson House

Today I took the family to Arundells and Mompesson House for a tour of each - it was a treat for my mother-in-law's birthday! Both houses are situated next to the Cathedral and having once been owned by two prominent politicians, Sir Edward Heath and Charles Mompesson respectively, the history and atmosphere was just amazing. Being able to visit two national treasures in a day is fantastic, and to think that we have so much history in the constituency is humbling

23 JUL 2010

Wilton House, Body Shop Petition and Wilton Surgery

Today I visited Lord Pembroke at Wilton House, with it's fantastic gardens. Its such an amazing place. I then signed the petition for the Body Shop's stop Children Sex Trafficking, an issue I was happy to support.

I spent this evening in Wilton, holding my surgery, and once again constituents had a number of issues that need to be dealt with, and I will endeavour to do my best.

16 JUL 2010

Schools, New Hall and the Trussell Trust.

Another busy Friday in the constituency this weekend. St. Joseph's School in Laverstock was the first port of call followed by the Trussell Trust and their food bank at the Elim Church. I then went out to the Stonehenge School in Amesbury, before paying a visit to New Hall Hospital, to tour their facilities.

10 JUL 2010

Salisbury Cathedral School Speech Day

I was lucky enough to be invited ato the Salisbury Cathedral School's Speech Day, where I gave prizes to the pupils, as well as attempt a speech of my own, which I think was well recieved! I hope that all the parents and pupils who attended had a great day, and really enjoyed it.

09 JUL 2010

Salisbury Fire Station and Surgery

As usual, my friday has been a hectic day in the constituency! At least Georgina, a student who shadowed me for the day, could see how busy the life of an MP can be.

We began by touring Salisbury Fire Station, watching a demonstration of the brave men and women at work, before mobving to the Alzheimer Society's Garden opening. once again there was a real sense of community in Salisbury. I also have had the pleasure of opening the Maldives Honorary Consulate in Salisbury, after their opposition leaders were in exile here. This evening I managed to fit in a two hour surgery, and hope to help as many of the constituents who came to see me as I can.

07 JUL 2010

Wilton, Lee Hurst Swan and New Stonehenge

Its been a busy couple of days for me, as Sunday saw me meet with the Wilton Vision Team at the Greyhound, abd Monday I visted Lee Hurst Swan School, on Campbell Road. Today I met Colin Shearing about the New Stonehenge proposals, and have a hefty business plan to read through. A lot of thought has gone into this project and it will soon be time to see if they can gain planning permission.

03 JUL 2010

Robert Key's Farewell

Robert Key was an outstanding Member of Parliament and served Salisbury extremely well for 27 years. If I had been given a pound for every time someone said to me on a Saturday morning in the marketplace " you have big shoes to fill" I would be a wealthy man. But of course they are right. This is why it was right that we had a "thank you" party for Robert on 3rd July at Lord and Lady Marland's gardens at Odstock Manor. Robert and Sue were joined by at least 75 well-wishers, several of whom had been there at his selection as the candidate in 1982! Robert made a moving speech and once again I felt very privileged to follow in his footsteps. I look forward to trying to emulate his success and longevity... I wonder who will be around from my selection meeting in 28 years time... will I survive that long I wonder? Happy retirement to Robert and Sue - richly deserved.

02 JUL 2010

Stonehenge, Schools and Salisbury Artists!

This morning I visited Brethren School in Pitton, as I continue to subject myself to the seemingly routine grilling from school children. It's great to be tested by young minds.

I then found myself whisked away to Stonehenge by English Heritage, to discuss the plans for the site, and even the rain didn't keep the visitors away! It's such a beautiful symbol of the area and we have to make sure that any plans will be in keeping with the aesthetic surroundings.

My evening finished with a trip to the Salisbury Library to see the Salisbury Artists Exhibition, and some of the works were astounding. It's always a pleasure to see the local creative talents on show!

27 JUN 2010

Armed Forces Day

It was brilliant to see the military parade through our streets. It was a reminder about the great job our men and women do for us, and we should always be supportive of their efforts. I took my wife and step-son along and they enjoyed it too. It was nice to have them with me at such an impressive event. Keep up the good work!

26 JUN 2010

New Forest School Fete

Another Saturday and another fete, this time at the New Forest School! This is what is so great about Salisbury and the surrounding area during the summer, everyone comes out to support their local community, provide food and refreshments in a friendly and welcoming atmosphere. Well done to all who made it a good event. I even managed to fit in the FSB Trade Fair at the Guildhall Hall.

25 JUN 2010

Amesbury Surgery and another School Visit!

I went to more schools in the constituency today, the Laverstock Schools- St. Joseph's, St. Edmund's and Wyvern, and Chafyn Grove. I was asked to talk to the Year 8 pupils at Chafyn, in the prelude to their trip to Westminster, which I hope they will all enjoy. So many of the children are passionate about learning and all seem to want as much knowledge as possible, and naturally I was happy to oblige.

This evening I took my surgery in Amesbury and was once again struck by the problems faced by those in the area. I will continue to fight for the rights of the people in the area, and do everything I can to make the new Government help the people of this constituency.

24 JUN 2010

House of Commons Defence Select Committee Selection

A great honour has been bestowed upon me, as I have been selected as a member of the House of Commons Defence Select Committee. I hope to be able to help the armed forces continue to do the job they do, and feel very priviledged to be involved.

19 JUN 2010

Whiteparish and Wyndam Park Summer Fayres

I made an appearance at the Whiteparish Summer Fete, and it still surprises me how welcoming everybody is. It was lovely to wander round the stalls and see the local community so close. I also visited the Wyndham Park and St. Mark's Schools Fete, where once again I was made to feel very much at home. At both, the homemade cakes were exceptional, and unfortunately I didn't win anything on the tombola!

18 JUN 2010

More School Visits and NASH

On Monday, I met Fran Stratton and Michelle Chilcott of South Wilts, in another of my school visits. I think it is a great success that so many of the schools in the area are up to such a high standard! It really is pleasing to see the children of the area enjoy their schooling.

I also visited Harnham Junior School and their Head, Luke Coles. It was fun being grilled by the children as they wanted to know what it was like being an MP. I then went on to the Infant School and it was great to be involved in their `Men at Work` Week and maybe I have already talked to a future Prime Minister! Not only did I visit Harnham, I also managed to squeeze in Bishop Wordsworth's and Salisbury High, completing an excellent day of seeing the local education system at work.

It wasn't all schools though. I went and met representatives of NASH - `No Amesbury Shed Henge`, where the local residents put forward their views on the local mega-shed proposals for Archers Gateway. This is clearly an emotive issue for local residents.

13 JUN 2010

South Wilts and the River Bourne Community Farm

What a busy weekend I have had. After the surgery last night, I have been to see Peter Curtis of the Salisbury and South Wilts Sports Club on Wilton Road to discuss their plans for a new pavilion. The Club house that is standing at the moment is 50 years old and the club has been pressing for development for many years. Like my predecessor, Robert Key, I have offered my full support.

I also visited the River Bourne Community Farm opening, and thoroughly enjoyed it. The rural feel of Salisbury came alive and it is always pleasing to see the community pull together. With such a large farming community, more projects and events like this are needed  The opening showed how important rural affairs are to the constituents, and once again it brought home the need to cut the red tape around our agriculture.

11 JUN 2010

Trafalgar School, Staff Charges and Bemerton Heath Surgery

Today I spoke with Jennie Lawrie, Head teacher of the Trafalgar School at Downton, to discuss the new Academy proposals. It's really good to see the progress the school has made under her guidance, and hopefully this will continue.

I also spoke to Matthew Kershaw and Luke March from the Salisbury District Hospital, about the problems facing the NHS, and locally, about the new Staff Parking fees. The situation is not ideal but it is regrettable that we must all make cuts - it is either this or the possibility of losing eight nurses. It is worth pointing out that there will be a review in a year, and it is by no means a permanent measure.

This evening I held my surgery at Bemerton Heath. It's a hard time for us all at the moment as the necessary changes are made by the new Government. It is good to meet constituents and hear about the problems they face, and to let them know how the new Government can support them.

09 JUN 2010

Henry Clark at Westminster

Yesterday I attended a reception in the House of Commons organised by The National Autistic Society. Their campaign, "Your Need to Know" is seeking to raise awareness of autism amongst children.

It was a privilege to meet Henry Clark, a Salisbury resident who took the stand and spoke very eloquently about his experience growing up with autism.

I was very proud to see Henry spoke so convincingly and in such a natural way about his circumstances and I felt like his god-father as I proudly told colleagues "he was my constituent".

Well done Henry and rest assured I heard your message and will work to ensure standards are clear for provision for autism in our schools.

06 JUN 2010

Royal British Legion Parade

Today I participated in the Royal British Legion's Parade and Service in the City. Beginning in the Market Square in Wilton, we walked to St Mary and St Nicholas church. I should have worn a suit, as I was reminded later by an anonymous caller! I'll try and remember next time.

29 MAY 2010

Impact Centre Opening

I attended the opening of the `Impact Centre` on Churchfields and was made to feel very welcome. The artwork was amazing as were the homemade cakes! It was very good to meet new constituents as well as visitors from the rest of the UK and South Africa. Well done to all those who put on such a wonderful opening!

28 MAY 2010

Downton Surgery

Today I held my first surgery in Downton's Memorial Hall.  I think it is very important that the local MP is accessible at all times so I am having surgeries all around the constituency on a regular basis.  I am also always available on Fridays and Saturdays (when Parliament is not sitting) to meet constituents.  If you would like to come along to a surgery or arrange a meeting please contact my Private Secretary - Sarah Axton on 01722 323050.

Throughout the day before the surgery, I met with representatives of the Wiltshire Constabulary, as well as with the Bishop of Salisbury and Salisbury College Principal, Di Dale. It was great to really get involved with the constituents and find out about their needs.

23 MAY 2010

Pitton and the Playhouse

Friday morning, I visited the lovely Pitton Primary School and engaged with the children there during their morning assembly. It's always a pleasure to see children enjoying their education.  That evening I  had the enjoyment of being entertained at the Festival reception and Show at the White Hart Hotel.

Saturday once again saw me meeting local constituents who were enjoying the Market stalls and surrounding shops. There is always such a busy feel around the city on a Saturday morning! It really is a pleasure to represent the constituency.

Tonight I went to the theatre at the wonderful Salisbury Playhouse with Bill Browne, Editor of Salisbury Journal. The performance of `Morecambe` was brilliant and I thoroughly enjoyed it!

15 MAY 2010

First Surgery and Mayor-making

On Friday, I held my first ever surgery at my offices in Brown Street. It turned out to be real eye-opener, as I was presented with a range of problems from constituents. I know this is going to be a challenging role and I will do my best to help those who come to me for support.

Saturday's Mayor-making was a great chance to meet so many local dignitaries - my first civic role as Member of Parliament for Salisbury.

Election Result

We did it! It has been such a hectic few weeks but I am delighted to have been returned as Member of Parliament for Salisbury. Thank you to everyone for their wonderful support. I look forward to serving the community and constituents of Salisbury!

Federation of Small Businesses Manifesto

This morning I met George Trytsman from Salisbury's FSB. We discussed the way the Labour Government have placed so many unnecessary burdens on small businesses With my father still running a small business in Wiltshire I was very sympathetic to what George had to say.

The manifesto contains a number of sensible proposals, many of which the Conservative party agree with. Our recent announcement to stop Labour's tax increase on National Insurance - a tax on jobs - being the most prominent.

The key thing we need in Britain today is growth in the private sector. The UK has become reliant on an over-sized public sector with too much bureacracy, waste, regulations and targets. We need a Conservative Government to free up businessmen like George and small businesses across Salisbury and South Wiltshire to do what they do best, deliver goods and services that people want and in so doing create new jobs and therefore prosperity for our communities.

Posters...

One of the challenges of a campaign is to get the posters up quickly. I am not sure they change peoples' voting intentions but they do make supporters feel positive about the campaign. Derek and Penny Brown have been fantastic supporters to me since selection. Last night Derek scaled new heights to get our posters seen! Thanks Derek - glad you are still  in one piece!

Barry Vincent - the Market Traders' Association

Following Qinetiq I went to visit Barry and Carol Vincent from Salisbury's Market Traders Association. Barry wanted to see me to share his views on the Salisbury Vision for the City Centre. Barry and his wife have built up a successful business selling socks and underwear and trade across the region. I shared my views with them and we seemed to agree on most things. I have enjoyed the diversity of my 50+ visits over the last two months. It has been interesting to sometimes take on different opinions on the same issue but I always try to be on receive more than transmit. No one wants a politician who is always full of himself! I will be in the Market tomorrow again after a breakfast meeting to start the day.

26 MAR 2010

Qinetiq Briefing

At lunchtime today I met a senior representative of Qinetiq - our locally based leading defence technology and security company - to seek to understand more fully their operations at Boscombe and their point of view on current pressures to the defence budget. When I worked with two Government Ministers nearly 15 years ago the process of understanding constituents' and stakeholders' points of view was always key to making the right decisions for the business. It is interesting to understand the wide application of technologies developed at Boscombe. I imagine I will have a lot to do with this company if I am elected on May 6th.

Campaign Meeting

Politics for me is about helping people and serving the community. But elections are also part of the trade so tonight we had a campaign planning meeting. I can't say much as I will give the game away... we have been canvassing and surveying since I was selected to fight the seat on 31st January... but whenever the election is called we need to step up a gear... so tonight was a planning meeting for the "formal campaign". I have an excellent Chairman in Penny Brown but the goodwill across our members is also encouraging... I have been to 6 Branch AGMs and the Association AGM over the last 6 weeks... we can't wait for Gordon Brown to fire the starting gun.... it has to be May 6th doesn't it?

22 MAR 2010

MAG - Three Crowns at Whaddon

After the Elizabeth Gardens debate I grabbed a cone of chips from Stobie's and headed off to Whaddon to meet the Motorcycle Action Group who are impressively led by Tim who I met a few weeks back. It was a great opportunity to get to know an area of Salisbury life I know nothing about. EU directives are gold-plated by UK governments making motorcyclists' lives a misery. We had a good chat and covered a number of areas. I don't think I will be buying a motorbike just yet but I was aligned with the majority of views in the room.

22 MAR 2010

Salisbury City Council - Amenities Committee - Elizabeth Gardens

This evening I attended a packed meeting in the Guildhall as the Amenities Committee of Salisbury City Council were making decisions about the plans to develop/improve Elizabeth Gardens. It was a long discussion and passions ran high. I think the outcome was largely positive - significant improvements will take place but with no viewing platform or amphitheatre which were the major concerns, seating near the entrance was also deemed unnecessary. After standing up for two hours listening I was not convinced that there was going to be an amphitheatre anyway! I do wonder why so much money needs to be spent though. Government should get in the habit of spending less and relying more on the third sector. The more the State does for us the less we are inclined to help ourselves - a far more rewarding pursuit for most people. The meeting was well chaired though and I was very impressed by the principled and thoughtful speech of Andrew Roberts who was most supportive of the original plans. He held his ground and addressed the criticisms courteously and thoughtfully.

Trussell Trust 10 year celebration service

This evening I attended a service at Elim church to celebrate the amazing work of the Trussell Trust which over the past 10 years has established hundreds of Food Banks across the UK and abroad. Salisbury should be extremely proud of the work of this charity. It is quite clear, that whatever one thinks about the fact that people are going hungry in a relatively well off City like ours it is remarkable that such an efficient resource has been established to meet peoples' most basic needs - (i.e. food to live) -without government planning. As always, I could not stay for long enough afterwards but Chris Mould's sermon and humility were a great example to me. It was a privilege to sit at the back and be part of the evening.

21 MAR 2010

Salisbury Area Young Musicians' Concert

This afternoon I had the great privilege of visiting the Salisbury Area Young Musicians' Concert in the City Hall. It was a fantastic event - so many young people, so much talent and so much pride in the hall. It was sad to hear that this was Robert Key's last public engagement. He has been a fantastic local MP and I am going to miss him. I am thrilled he will be staying in Salisbury. What commitment the young children have shown to practise for so long to achieve such outstanding performances. Well Done to Ian Preece and his committee and all involved in the event; I believe they were back in the Hall in the evening to do it all again! I hope the people of Salisbury will allow me to come next year... regardless of the outcome on May 6th I think I will come back anyway!

20 MAR 2010

MS Society Lunch

Quickly after the morning session in the Market Square I visited a lunch for 40 members of the local MS society. It was a great opportunity to meet some very brave and determined individuals. Some suffering a great deal, others stoic and others clearly committed to fundraising. I was challenged about availability of resources for the right equipment (especially high-spec wheel-chairs). It made me realise once again how critical the NHS is and it is great to remember the commitments the Conservative Party have made to the NHS. As usual I didn't win anything in the Raffle - my 9th of the month... the last prize ( a doll) would have been perfect for Emily - when she comes back from holiday on Friday. Oh well... next time.

20 MAR 2010

Guildhall as usual!

This morning we had an early start - 8am in the Guildhall! It was great to have three younger Conservative members with me this morning. Lots of people get up early to go into the market to it whatever the hour there are always plenty of people about. I did my usual round of the stall holders and then greeted prospective constituents as they went to do their shopping. It is always a balancing act - do they want to speak, am I getting in the way, do they despise me instinctively or is a long chat needed? One of my opponents now wants to share the venue so we finished at 10 and let them have the patch. Salisbury residents' will probably be sick of us by May 6th - well at least we have made ourselves available.

18 MAR 2010

Landford Parish visit.

I had a very informative meeting with Alan Westmore Chairman of Landford Parish Council and school governor. Alan gave us a tour of the Landford parish and we visited the school. I was very impressed by the wayit had adapted to cope with smaller numbers and combined with the neighbouring school to make the best of facilities available. It was great to see the young children enjoying themselves running around in the field at break time.

18 MAR 2010

Downton, Redlynch, Woodfalls, Nomansland

Today was an action packed day meeting many people in the Downton , Redlynch and Woodfalls areas. I started with a meeting with the excellent Leo Randall and then delivered some In Touch and Postal/Proxy Vote Forms, then on to Morgans Vale Council Estate and Morgans Vale and Woodfalls Primary School to meet Graham Nagel-Smith who raised some very valid points about budgets and testing at Primary level. I need to get back to him. Then we moved quickly on to Woodfalls Post Office to meet Mr Richard Swanborough and PC Matt Holland (Beat Manager). Great to hear about how the police are so accessible to the local community. A real sense of commitment to one another exists in the villages.

I then had a brief visit to Pound Bottom Landfill & Re-cycling Centre and then onto to School Road to meet David Trick (RPC) to understand local concerns about land use. My meeting with Mike Smales at Lyburn Farm & Cheesemakers made me realise how much we are on the edge of Wiltshire - because so much of his trade is in Hampshire rather than North of the patch.

Lunch was with the excellent and experienced Cllr Julian Johnson. Just when I thought it was safe I then had a meeting with several Downton residents... a real grilling... but at least they had a chance to put me through my paces. I didn't have time to meet Connie Bishop my Nanna's old school friend in the Borough - hope I can see her when we return later in the campaign.

18 MAR 2010

Southern Area Board

After the drinks at Strawberry Fox I headed to the Southern Area Board. This is a forum for people living in the area to discuss matters of concern. We focused on Tourism and what can be done to increase people's spending and interest in Salisbury and South Wiltshire, we also looked at the plans for development at The Old Manor Site, Wilton Road. Not too many fireworks but it was well attended and clearly an effective way to consult local people between elections. It was good to see so many familiar and friendly faces in the room.

18 MAR 2010

Strawberry Fox New Season

This evening I popped into a drinks party to open the season for Strawberry Fox - an equisite leather shop in the centre of town.

It was good to see Theresa again who gives a new meaning to dynamic! I have only met her three times but she has a very positive approach to the community and my mother did well on Mother's Day from her persuasive sales techniques.

I met the gentleman who took the "serious" photo of me used in The Journal after I was selected. I obviously made no impression on him as he did not recognise me. I was also told my election photos are not very good. I hope this one is better....thanks Michael!

18 MAR 2010

I am borderline clinically obese!!!!.

Today has been the most shocking day of the campaign. In good faith I turned up at the Southern Area Board Health Fair at St Edmund's School. It was an attempt to engage with the local community on health matters. I visited a number of the stalls but was quite distressed to find that when my weight and BMI was worked out I am on the border line of being obese. I won't tell Emma this otherwise her excellent food will be rationed... I will have to do even more knocking on doors and canvassing. It was a useful event - but only 12 people stayed for the presentation at the end. I am concerned that we spend more time focusing on care for our Senior Citizens - with so many people living longer I think quality of life for older people (in respect of health) is too often neglected.

17 MAR 2010

River Bourne Community Farm

AMAZING! Today I visited Ben Parker in Laverstock to look at his plans for the City Farm in Cow Lane . The man's vision was exciting and infectious - land had been cleared, the whole area reclaimed from being on the brink of being used as a cemetery! Ben and his team hope to launch formally later in the year to allow local schools to learn about the abundant Wiltshire countryside that I grew up in but nowadays few really experience. I was impressed by his "no nonsense" approach and I had new insights on the perils of too much interference from too many Government agencies... I intend to follow developments here very carefully and do all I can (if elected) to support this worthwhile initiative. Tellingly the majority of the funding and work comes from volunteers... this is the norm in Salisbury... very humbling to see such passion for improving the community.

12 MAR 2010

Visit Salisbury and District Alzheimer's Society

This afternoon I met Andrew Day, the Branch Manager of Salisbury and District Alzheimer's Society to discuss the funding for the work of his charity. We had met briefly the previous day at the Area Board Health Fair. The key issue as I said yesterday is how we prioritise funding for our elderly. Andrew struck a very balanced and reasonable tone. We agreed that I would take up a specific issue after the election (should I be elected). I hope to raise funds in future for local charities too.

11 MAR 2010

Visiting the Dean of Salisbury Cathedral

Salisbury Cathedral is the most significant edifice in Wiltshire. It dominates the physical landscape of our City and it is important that if I am going to be a credible candidate to be the next MP I need to have a good understanding of the role the Cathedral plays in the City. Today I visited June Osborne, the Dean of the Cathedral and we had a wide-ranging 90 minute discussion about the role the Cathedral in the City. I have also met leaders of the Baptist Church, Salisbury City Church as well as Pastors from St Paul's, Elim and Plymouth Brethren. As a committed Christian myself I always find meeting with believers a stimulating experience. Working out the nuances of their Missions and their views about one another is a privileged position - one where tact, an ability to hold and retain confidences and diplomacy are required! I enjoyed meeting June. She is a strong leader and character, clearly passionate about serving Salisbury. I hope to meet all Church leaders before the election. We have a Churches Together meeting on 25th April which will allow the electorate to examine candidates' views on issues which matter to them.

08 MAR 2010

Salisbury Council Meeting

Tonight I visited the full council meeting. I received a warm welcome from the Mayor who asked me not to walk off with the statue. I had to leave the hall for a "reserved item" and dutifully waited outside but the door never opened again - a shame as I would have liked to stay for the whole meeting. I think it is important that an aspiring MP keeps close to the local politics - all politics is local as everyone indicates when they lobby me about the potholes on Saturday mornings.

05 MAR 2010

Salisbury Hospital Visit

Today I visited Salisbury District Hospital. It was not an official visit but I needed to get a feel for the scale of the site and the facilities. Everyone speaks highly of our local hospital and it has had impressive investment in new buildings under Conservative and Labour governments. Going forward the challenge will be to find new ways of saving money whilst never compromising on the quality of the outcomes and care received by patients. As a student I studied policy making in the NHS and I look forward to further visits if elected. Getting the NHS to work effectively and efficiently is a real challenge.

04 MAR 2010

Association of Council Taxpayers Briefing

I received an invaluable briefing from John Ellis concerning planning issues around Solstice Park. John has been a committed campaigner on behalf of ACT for a long time. He gave me a number of plans for the bypass which require serious thought. It was a useful initial discussion. There is no immediate action to be taken but it struck me again how committed so many people are in Salisbury to seeing that decisions are made properly - John being one of them!

02 MAR 2010

Tour of Wilton

Today Cllr Richard Beattie and Felicity Smith gave me tour of the Wilton area  - and a briefing on the challenges facing the town. It was the most efficient use of time so far - with Richard clearly on top of every square inch of his Unitary seat. I was saddened to see the unused school in such a derelict state but it gave me a very good understanding of the area - I look forward to visiting again soon as we ramp up the canvassing in the run up to the Election.

27 FEB 2010

Guildhall Stall - Meeting the people of Salisbury and Bournemouth!

Today I started my stall in front of the Guildhall. I am committed to be there every Saturday morning until the election - rain or shine - if elected I will continue the practice. Today I was a bit bleary eyed as I finished the sleep out at 7 am and had just one hour to get showered at my friend's house and get down to the Market Square. Lots of views expressed on the Salisbury Vision - I will continue to listen and learn - and fix up a meeting with the Market Traders Association soon to take the offical pulse. I used to visit the market regularly as a child with my family. Quite remarkable how many people come up from Southhampton or Bournemouth both to run a market stall or to browse the offerings.... the cold weather is not great... at least we didn't have rain on my first Saturday morning.

26 FEB 2010

Alabare Sleep Out

After a day in Court in London, a journey back on the train and a visit to Broadchalke's Branch AGM I ventured back into the City Centre for my "sleep out". Cllr Cochrane asked me to join him on the Sleep Out to raise funds for the Homeless charity - Alabare. It was a cold night and it really did make me think about the plight of the homeless. What is clear is that successive governments of all parties have always struggled to find the complete solution to the homelessness problem. Often homeless people are locked in a complex web of difficulties; poverty, relationship breakdown, mental or physical illnesses and unemployment often leave a distrust of officialdom. Therefore provision of shelter under the auspices of a Council or "state" provider is often too intimidating. Alabare are doing a great job and the winter sleep out is a great way of raising funds. I raised £137 - not as much as I hoped for through lack of time to get sponsors but if elected I will attend in future years (if at all possible)

20 FEB 2010

St Paul's Conservative Club - Cabaret Evening

All campaigning needs some fun. Tonight Cllr John Lindley took me to St Paul's Conservative Club for their annual Cabaret evening. I was quite humbled when they showed me the picture of Robert Key on the wall... "we hope to have yours up there soon" - we shall see. I don't take anything for granted. It was great to meet so many locals and enjoy the comedian who was very good... I shall try to adapt a few of the jokes for my speeches over the coming weeks!

20 FEB 2010

Archer's Gate Visit

Today Selaine Saxby introduced me to Jan Ferraro - a community leader of the Archer's Gate development. Despite being unforgivably late  Jan gave me an excellent overview of the issues on the estate. We met some local residents and saw the new children's play area which seemed very small to me.... further development nearby must have the necessary infratstructure to support the new population..... the challenge for all developments.

20 FEB 2010

Wilton Hunt Meet at Trafalgar Park

Though not an active member of a hunt myself I do support the right for individuals to choose to hunt unreservedly. Today I visited a meet at Trafalgar House. Caroline Noakes our candidate from Romsey addressed the crowd but it was a good opportunity to meet local country people and assure them that I would be voting to abolish the ban on hunting if the Conservatives win the election and allow a free vote on the issue. I think the legislation was vindictive and typical of a government that does not have an understanding of the ways of the countryside. This is shown in the way Gordon Brown appointed Jim Fitzpatrick MP, a member for Poplar and Canning Town (East London) to the post of Farming Minister... not many farms in East London the last time I visited! Tomorrow I am off to a point-to-point, organised by the Countryside Alliance near Blandford.

19 FEB 2010

Visit to HPI Limited

Understanding the state of the economy through close relationships with business leaders has to be a priority for an aspiring MP. Today I had a meeting at HPI limited, a big local employer based in Dolphin House, New Street. It is astonishing how Salisbury has such gems - businesses based around the proximity of good local schools and communications. Hard work, product innovation and excellent customer service seem to be the reasons why HPI is doing well through tough times.

19 FEB 2010

Salisbury International Arts Festival

This morning I met the Director and Chairman of Salisbury's International Arts Festival. What an impressive organisation that lies behind this event. I hope to be able to go to many events later in the year. I have heard some concerns expressed about the "International" element of the event - but I am reassured - there is a lot going on locally involving the local community. Good luck Maria with the final planning...and execution!

18 FEB 2010

Drink in The Chequers....

Felt a bit awkward about my meeting with Ian (Axton) - after his decision to stand down from competing in the Open Primary. I needn't have worried - Ian is a suberb individual, so much integrity, honesty and charm and a very successful businessman. I am very fortunate he decided for his own reasons that being the MP for Salisbury was not his thing. He would have been formidable competition in the Playhouse. I also met a consultant from the hospital to get an inside take on the City and Odstock's problems. So much to take in!

18 FEB 2010

Visit to Bemerton Heath Community Centre and Children's Centre

Today Cllr Chris Cochrane introduced me to the people who run the Children's centre and Neighbourhood Centre at Bemerton Heath. I was impressed by the commitment of Cllr Ricky Rogers to his community and Edward and Mark who work in the Neighbourhood Centre. I heard about their hopes to extend the venue to increase capacity and usage. I hope to be able to lobby Jane Scott to make sure our Unitary Council come up with their share of the funding. Salisbury City Council are supporting a much used and valued resource here.  Today's visit reminds me of how important it is to provide venues for young people to meet. Too often politicians blame young people for everything - when they should be providing constructive environments for them to meet and socialise. Congratulations to Ricky, Edward and Mark who give so much to the community.

18 FEB 2010

Visit Salisbury Racecourse

I was invited to meet the Senior Management of Salisbury Racecourse today. We had a useful meeting discussing the role the Racecourse has in the community and the number of jobs the venue generates on race days. I hope to be able to make it to the Family Day later in June. A very professionally run sporting venue.

18 FEB 2010

FOUND SALISBURY HOME

Hurrah - we have found a home to move into in central Salisbury - Charter Court, Gigant Street. Great news! Marcus Shepherd has been superb. I hope we can move in quickly - I don't like to impose on friends by staying over all the time in their house.

16 FEB 2010

Visit to Bishopdown Farm

I visited John Seymour and his wife at Bishopdown Farm this morning. John gave me an overview of the issues on the estate and the fears over future development. John epitomises all that is good about Salisbury - public spirited people trying to do their bit for their local community. John was not particularly political but he was concerned to stand up for the interests of his neighbours. It was a useful visit and I learnt a lot from his briefing.

16 FEB 2010

Visit Chemring Countermeasures with Robert Key MP

Today I visited Chemring Countermeasures at High Post with Robert Key MP. Chemring  design, develop and manufacture radar-reflective and screening materials and RF countermeasure payloads. I didn't understand all the science but the new automated production process was very impressive. I hope my friend Liam Fox can be persuaded to open the new facility when it is ready!

12 FEB 2010

Meeting with Richard Walters, Salisbury Vision

One of the hot topics for the market traders is the issue of the development of the City Centre. Today I visited Richard Walters for the 2nd time to clarify the timelines and consultation processes that will be gone through prior to any decisions being made. I am always in favour of progress and development - but wasteful, over-elaborate schemes that don't improve things need to be avoided. I was very impressed with Richard's methodical and sensible approach and his clear sense of what needs to be done. I hope to work with him closely to influence the outcome of the plans - aiming to represent the views of the whole of Salisbury into the mix.

11 FEB 2010

Visit to Rev Gordon Malcolm at Elim Church

It was a real privilege to meet Gordon Malcolm today at Elim Church. His commitment to the community and his desire to look after the vulnerable was remarkable. He is concerned about the future of Sure Start under a Conservative Government. I hope to meet as many church and community leaders before the election.

We support Sure Start Children's Centres and believe they will play a crucial role in making Britain one of the most family-friendly countries in Europe. Unfortunately Labour is guilty of spreading scare stories about Conservatives cutting Sure Start. It is shameful that parents and Sure Start staff are being worried and misled in this way.

We support Sure Start but know that it needs to work more effectively in the future. We have already announced how a Conservative Government will strengthen Sure Start through a universal Sure Start Health Visitor service. This will be funded with money from Health and extra money already set aside by the Government to strengthen outreach to vulnerable families.

Our plans will give parents the professional health visitor support they need in the crucial early years of their child's life. Health visitors are also more effective at reaching out to the poorest and most vulnerable families. We believe voluntary organisations, with a proven track record in supporting families, should be more involved in managing centres and providing services. Paying centres partially on the results they achieve will also help incentivise better management in Sure Start centres and increase the focus on delivering better family support which was what Sure Start was originally designed for.

11 FEB 2010

Grilled at Bishop's

Today I visited Bishop Wordsworth's Politics Society. I was extremely impressed by the quality of the pupils' questions and the confident way they fired them at me! I have visited the School before when I was at University - we had a scheme encouraging state school pupils to apply to Oxford University. As my college's Target Schools Rep I had visited in 1994 - it was great to return with a different hat on today. There was a great buzz to the school - many of the politics ethusiasts were very keen to tell me their plans for a career in politics. As I always say - do something else first - politics is not a profession but a form of public service, experience something else of the world first if you can!

11 FEB 2010

Visit Stonehenge School

Today I visited Stonehenge School in Amesbury. Great spirit about the place - lots of committed teachers. I was given a grilling by some Year 10 children but it was good fun. The school needs more funding - as does the rest of Wiltshire. We have been badly let down by this Labour government - the grant is so small for Wiltshire children. We need a Conservative Government to change all this.

09 FEB 2010

Home search continues

Although I have been in Salisbury a lot in the first 10 days I am still working at Accenture (based in London). Managed to visit some more properties today but not yet found one suitable for the children. I hope we can find something soon.

05 FEB 2010

First Branch AGM - Harnham

Tonight it was my first Conservative Branch AGM. Amazed to see so many committed members turn out to welcome me. I enjoyed a 45 minute Q&A with the Harnham residents. Fantastic resilience in our party but striking how few of our committed members are under 70. I was taken aback by the enthusiasm for the election campaign. I told them there was no room for complacency!

05 FEB 2010

Meeting local Councillors

I met several Salisbury Councillors today - all wanted to give me their take on the political history of the constituency. No one seemed to be keen on the unitary authority - but this is history now. I did a 3 minute interview with winkball.com - a great initiative to put all candidates on the web. In the evening I had a briefing in Porton with a serving armed forces officer as well as a conversation about Salisbury schools.

04 FEB 2010

Property hunt begins

Spent several hours visiting properties in and around Salisbury. Need to find a family home as soon as possible. I see some of my opponents are already criticising me for not having lived in Salisbury. Give me a chance!

01 FEB 2010

Campaign begins

First media activity began with an 8am interview with BBC Wiltshire Sound and Spire FM. Think it went ok but as with all media you take your chances! Journal photographer visited the office in the morning but I'm a bit worried about which photo they'll use...I bet they'll use the one of me looking serious and a bit grumpy!

31 JAN 2010

Salisbury Open Primary

I won! What an exhilarating day. It's difficult to take in but the campaign begins now.
