As a member of the Defence Select Committee, one of my jobs is to work in conjunction with three other select committees to discuss Arms Export Controls. This is a group formed in 1999 to examine the Government's expenditure, administration and policy on strategic exports (the licensing of arms exports). I am nominated by the Defence Select Committee to attend, and we normally examine the previous year's exports and any developments.
We are currently undertaking a scrutiny of arms control in 2011, particularly to North Africa and the Middle East. This includes taking evidence from national organisations, including Amnesty International and Oxfam. I am glad to be serving on a committee that investigates such an important issue; more information is available here.
