Rising fuel bills are an issue of extreme concern to a number of my constituents. I share the view that seven million people living in fuel poverty is an unacceptable tragedy that we do not have to suffer in the modern world, and I welcome the Government's pledges to implement new measures.
The Warm Front scheme is one of these, which offers heating and insulation improvements to households on low incomes, has announced it is set up for a £30 million underspend this year due to a reduction in the number of people applying. This money could help up to 16000 households cut their costs by a potential £650 annually.
Those eligible for support include older people on pension credit, families with a child under five on Income Support or Jobseeker's and people with higher rate disability premiums. For more details, or to apply online, visit directgov
Equally, I am actively supportive of the Community Foundation's Surviving Winter campaign, which could provide additional financial support. They offer grants of £125 that could provide fuel bill payment, oil, gas or a top up of electricity for the elderly or those suffering from extreme hardship. For more details, click here.
